Greyhound racing, an exciting sport that rapidly gained popularity in Britain in 1926, initially faced fierce opposition from the middle class. This resistance was primarily due to the legal gambling opportunities the sport presented to the working class. Despite being denounced as a decadent and impoverishing pastime, it offered a significant leisure opportunity for the working class at a minimal cost, serving as a harmless ‘flutter’ for the small fraction of bettors involved. This book provides the first comprehensive study of greyhound racing in Britain, tracing its journey from its explosive beginnings and pinnacle in the 1930s and 1940s, through to its gradual decline in the late 20th century. The study is largely shaped by the contentious issue of working-class gambling and the spirited opposition to both it and greyhound racing. However, the allure of this ‘American Night Out’ will also be explored. Read more.
